Walter Clifton Morris built his career, raised a family, and spent his adulthood on Buena Vista Avenue, a street he proudly called home. He worked for 42 years at the local Del Monte Plant, was active at St. Philip Neri Church, volunteered for 52+ years with Meals on Wheels, and loved rescuing pets.
“Stella was the ‘glue’ that kept the family unit together. She was a counselor, supporter, and scheduler to see that all family members could do their best.” Loved ones remember Alameda resident Stella Corica, who passed away on July 10 at the age of 99 in the family home she lived in since 1964.
Judith Lynch passed away on June 11, 2026. Known for her smile and humor, she published two books, taught local children and seniors, and developed the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society’s walking tours.

Sandra Jo (Myers) Amstutz passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, at the age of 79. “Above all else, Sandy was a devoted wife, mother, and a doting grandmother whose greatest joy was her family.”
James “Jim” Charles Smallman, 87, of Alameda, California, passed away on December 31, 2025. Jim served on the boards of the Alameda Architectural Preservation Society and Alameda Museum, volunteered at the Meyers House and Garden, and tutored students at Alternatives in Action High School.
“He gave freely of his counsel, resources, time, and expertise, helping friends, neighbors, organizations, and cities better understand what was worth preserving.” Friends and community members remember Christopher Buckley, longtime Alameda resident, city planner, preservationist, and tree advocate.
“Barbara Jane Kettelhut (Bachtell), aged 80, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, in Sacramento, California. Born on March 18, 1946, in Alameda, California, Barbara lived a vibrant and full life marked by her love for family, adventurous spirit, and unique personality.”
