Barbara Jane Kettelhut (Bachtell), aged 80, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, in Sacramento, California. Born on March 18, 1946, in Alameda, California, Barbara lived a vibrant and full life marked by her love for family, adventurous spirit, and unique personality.
Barbara was the cherished daughter of the late Russell and Mary Bachtell. She grew up alongside her siblings, including her sister Valerie Bachtell and her late brothers Russell and Raymond Bachtell. Her strong-willed nature and free-spirited outlook on life earned her the affectionate title of “family-oriented hippie,” a description that perfectly encapsulated her essence.
Barbara shared a deep and enduring love with her late husband, Larry Kettelhut. Together, they created countless memories during their many adventures, particularly their cruises and treasured trips to Hawaii. Their bond was one of joy and exploration, filled with laughter and shared passions.
Family was at the heart of Barbara’s life. She is survived by her loving daughter Sarylsue Kettelhut DiFabio (Dennis), grandson Steven Kettelhut, granddaughter Christine Gaster, and great-grandchildren Lily, Hunter, Anastasia, Adaline, and Aubriella. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter Kerrie Ann Olsem but carried Kerrie’s memory with her always.
Barbara had a special place in her heart for all things Disney—a passion that brought magic into her life—and she adored spending time with her beloved dog Wyatt (affectionately called Boobie) as well as watching her chickens. She was a very proud supporter of the military (especially the United States Marine Corps). Her home was filled with warmth and love, reflecting the joy she found in both simple pleasures and grand adventures.
Her strength of character shone through in every aspect of her life. Barbara faced challenges with resilience and grace while remaining deeply devoted to those she loved. Her legacy is one of unwavering love for family and an appreciation for life’s beauty.
In honor of Barbara’s memory, donations may be made to UC Davis Medical Center in recognition of the care she received there.
Barbara will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May the memories of her kindness, strength, and vibrant spirit bring comfort to those who mourn her passing.
