Innovation Island Excellence Awards Announce Inaugural Winners

Groundbreaking achievements celebrated across six categories

The Alameda Chamber & Economic Alliance unveiled the winners of its inaugural Innovation Island Excellence Awards at a celebratory event on Thursday, June 26 at Almanac Brewery. The awards honor the pioneering spirit, groundbreaking initiatives, and significant contributions of businesses and organizations that are shaping Alameda’s future and driving positive change within the community.

“The Innovation Island Excellence Awards truly highlight the incredible ingenuity and dedication that thrives within our Alameda community,” said Madlen Saddik, President and CEO of the Alameda Chamber & Economic Alliance. “Each of these winners, and indeed all our nominees, embody the spirit of innovation that makes Alameda a beacon of progress. Their commitment to pushing boundaries, fostering community impact, and championing sustainability is not just inspiring, but essential for our collective growth and prosperity.”

The winners and nominees in each of the six distinct categories were as follows.

Most Innovative New Company: Navier Boat. This award celebrates a new business committed to innovation that has introduced groundbreaking products, services, or business models to the market. Navier was recognized for its visionary approach and significant impact in its field. Nominees: Pyka Inc., Navier, Anthro Energy.

Most Innovative Public Sector Agency: City of Alameda, Resiliency & Sustainability, Director Danielle Mieler. This award acknowledges a public sector entity providing innovative solutions or initiatives to benefit the community and/or drive economic growth. The City of Alameda’s Resiliency & Sustainability team, under the leadership of Director Danielle Mieler, was honored for its exemplary contributions to community well-being and economic vitality. Nominees: City of Alameda, Resiliency & Sustainability, Director Danielle Mieler; SF Bay Ferry, Executive Director Seamus Murphy; AMP, General Manager Tim Haines.

Community Impact Award: Oakland Roots/Oakland Soul. This award honors a business that has made significant contributions to Alameda through innovative programs, initiatives, or partnerships. Oakland Roots/Oakland Soul was celebrated for its novel approaches to corporate social responsibility, unique collaborations with local organizations, and creative solutions to community challenges. Nominees: Alameda Food Bank, Oakland Roots/Oakland Soul, Alameda Education Foundation.

Most Innovative Project: RADIUM. This award honors the most forward-thinking development project in Alameda. RADIUM was recognized for its creative approach and its part in revitalizing Alameda Point in a way that enhances community connectivity and economic vibrancy. Nominees: RADIUM, West Midway/RESHAP, Storehouse Lofts.

Excellence in Workforce Development Award: College of Alameda. This award recognizes an organization that has implemented creative and forward-thinking workforce development strategies. College of Alameda was honored for its unique training programs, inclusive hiring practices, and educational partnerships that are preparing the next generation of workers with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing economy. Nominees: Bay Ship & Yacht Co., College of Alameda, The Reap Center.

Sustainable Innovation Award: Science Corp. This award honors a business or organization that has developed or implemented innovative practices, products, or technologies that advance environmental sustainability. Science Corp was recognized for its innovative practices to improve quality of life to those with debilitating conditions for which there are no treatment options, creating devices aimed at restoring vision, cognition, and mobility to patients who have lost it. Nominees: Natel Energy, Science Corp, Remedy Scientific.

Additionally, the Alameda Chamber & Economic Alliance bestowed its annual Future Forward Leadership Award (formerly known as the President’s Award) to City Manager Jennifer Ott. City Manager Ott earned this honor for her dedication and unwavering commitment to the community’s prosperity, along with her tireless dedication to the community and her “above and beyond” attitude in making things happen. She consistently navigates complex challenges and champions initiatives that directly benefit businesses and residents.

The Chamber congratulated all of the winners and nominees for their outstanding achievements and their unwavering commitment to fostering innovation within the community. The success of these organizations underscores Alameda’s reputation as a true “Innovation Island.”
