The Alameda Kiwanis Foundation announced its scholarship winners for 2024, recognizing nine graduating seniors from Alameda high schools. The awardees were selected by a committee of eight Kiwanians who evaluated numerous applications from exemplary students based on criteria including academics, leadership, financial need, community service, and extracurricular activities. The scholarship recipients were honored at a ceremony on June 5, attended by their families and friends.
Among the winners are Sean Phu from Encinal High School, who received the Key Club Scholarship, and Jeremy Sagurit, also from Encinal High School, who was awarded the Herb and Jeanne Justin Scholarship.
Kayla Chin from the Alameda Science and Technology Institute was the recipient of the Asher Broughton Scholarship, while Ivan Lopez-Herrera from Encinal High School received the Martin and Lucille Stohr Scholarship.
Five other students were awarded Kiwanis Foundation Scholarships: Winnie Gao from the Alameda Science and Technology Institute, Nina Leach from Encinal High School, Jiajie Luo from Alameda High School, Phuong Nguyen from NEA Community Learning Center, and Justice Petersen from Encinal High School.
Kiwanis, a service organization with chapters across the United States and abroad, is dedicated to improving lives, focusing on one child and one community at a time. The Alameda Kiwanis chapter, chartered in 1923, has a long history of participating in various service projects that align with this objective, with college scholarships always being a top priority. As the cost of higher education continues to rise, this financial aid provides significant benefits to the students, their families, and the entire community.
