La Bohème was the first opera to be presented by San Francisco Opera 100 years ago. Now the company is celebrating their 100th season by bringing the opera to Alameda for a weekend of free performances from March 10–12.
In partnership with the City of Alameda and RADIUM Presents, the performances will take place on an expansive taxiway at the former Naval Air Station, nestled between the brand-new Waterfront Park and the Naval Air Museum, and just a short walk from the Seaplane Ferry Terminal.
Composer Giacomo Puccini’s popular work about love and loss among a group of bohemian artists will be performed in an intimate 75-minute version on a shipping container that has been converted into an opera stage.
Directed by Jose Maria Condemi, Bohème Out of the Box features a cast of San Francisco Opera’s young artists-in-residence, the Adler Fellows, and guest artists with piano accompaniment. Pre-Opera Talks at the front of the stage will be offered 45 minutes before showtime for Friday and Saturday performances. Families with young children are invited to attend First Act Workshops 45 minutes before showtime at the Sunday matinée performance.
There is no charge to attend Bohème Out of the Box. Registration at sfopera.com/box is encouraged but not required. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating will be on the concrete taxiway, covered with a comfortable artificial lawn. There are no reserved seats, so audiences are encouraged to bring blankets or low camp chairs, and come early to pick a spot. A limited number of folding chairs will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Food and drinks are allowed and will also be offered for purchase onsite.
The weather forecast for this weekend shows it may be rainy and stormy during some of the planned events. If it does rain, the outdoor performances may be canceled or delayed. Register at sfopera.com/box to receive updates via email and follow @sfopera on Instagram and Facebook for updates.
