Bear’s-Eye View of Alameda for November 12, 2023
After five weeks of reporting on all the Halloween decorations, it is finally time for me to refocus on all the other goings-on here in town. Fall is definitely in the air with the temps dropping into the 40s at night, more rain in the forecast, and that damned switch to Pacific Standard time. I hate it. I sat at my food bowl till almost 8 a.m. (according to the clock, but not my stomach) wondering where my 7 a.m. meal was.
Another sign of fall is how Alameda’s trees and leaves are starting to turn the colors of yellow, orange, red, and brown. I will be heading to Gibbons Drive in the coming weeks to check out our local equivalent of New England in the fall.
It seems like every year, right after Halloween, my human companion starts railing against the appearance of holiday decorations relating to December 25th. Sure enough, he started up again on a trip to South Shore where the big holiday tree is already set up in the center court. While this isn’t a big deal for me, I do understand his pushback of the early emphasis on the commercialization of meaningful events in peoples’ lives. And it is so noted.
On my Thursday afternoon excursion, I was walking by the corner of Central Avenue and Chestnut Street and noticed an artist with a painter’s easel. I though the Frank Bette Plein Air event was over, so I headed over to see what was up. It turns out Nathaniel was painting the church as a commission. We discussed his interpretation and vision for the painting, and then I excused myself and pulled my human companion back home so I wouldn’t miss my 4 p.m. meal.
On the way home, I checked out the new mirror someone has installed. How considerate. Now, I can check out my grooming. All the mirrors at my house are up high and above the sink, so I never know if I am well-groomed or not.
I spotted this Las Vegas Raiders license plate on a car here in Alameda and thought it was “curious.” The Raiders emblem was the obvious give away that something was fishy. Then, there was the “current registration tag” from 2007 that did look official. Maybe it was to commemorate the last time they had a winning season? So, I did some investigating and found out that this plate was legit. Here is the website that confirms it.
For those that are keeping up with the progress on the major renovations of 1619 Central Avenue, I had the great fortune of passing by the house on the final walk of the day to see it lit up. But there’s not much to see other than the walls have been taken down to the studs.
If you haven’t seen the giant pumpkin over at Dan’s Produce located on the corner of Central Avenue and Oak Street, you should drop by. It reminded me of an orange Jabba the Hut without the tail.
Finally, I am including a picture of the an actual sign that is posted at the Juneau International Airport warning about Coyote activity in the area. You must read the small print. I cracked up so bad over it. Thank you Susan L. for sending it to me!
