Bear’s-Eye View of Alameda for April 26, 2026

Start your day the Alameda Post way

Alameda Post - The logo for the Alameda Post.

As the roving reporter for the Bear’s-Eye View of Alameda, I rely on local news to inform me of places I should be walking in order to bring residents the most current and accurate information about Alameda happenings. That’s why when I get up in the morning, the first thing I do is read the Alameda Post. (Editor’s note: Actually, it’s not the very first thing Mouf does when he gets up. 💩)

After the Alameda Sun newspaper closed its doors, our fair city became a news desert. Think about that! A city of almost 80,000 people located in the middle of one of the most densely populated areas in the United States had no news organization covering City Council meetings, informing parents about what was going on in their schools, or promoting adoptions of animals that found their way to the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter.

Did you know that Alameda is on its way to having a regional art center? It was in the Post. How about a community calendar of events that you can see at a glance for planning a weekend outing?

My colleagues at the Alameda Post (I have always wanted to say that) do a great job of covering the Alameda beat. In addition to covering city council and planning board meetings, the Saturday issue highlights a FAAS animal available for adoption, and on Sunday, my report is a front-page feature. What could be more local than that?

I want to take this opportunity to say Thank You to Adam, Kelsey, and the entire Alameda Post staff for the great job they do to keep us informed. As the publisher of the Post, Adam is acutely aware of the costs associated with getting out a “daily.”

His mantra is “news is not free,” and I want to do my part to support local news. So I am asking my readers to consider making a donation to the Alameda Post. Your contribution will help keep local news accessible to all residents. If you’re into the KQED giving model, please consider an ongoing monthly donation.

Now on to the sightings for the week.

Alameda Post - Photos of colorful yellow, pink, and orange flowers.

It was one rainy week, and while I was able to get all my walks in (thanks, HC), there were few opportunities for photo taking. When the sun did come out, I checked out several yards for more signs of spring. These multi-colored Rio Samba roses and nasturtiums caught my eye. So dang beautiful.

Another sign of spring was the return of the mallards to the yard on Lafayette Street. In past years, this is where a mated pair would hang out. Right now, it appears to be a bachelor pad for some early returning migrators.

Alameda Post - Fairy doors at the base of trees.

It was nice to see that fairy doors have not completely disappeared from the street scene. However, I have noticed the newer ones are much bigger than the original COVID-era ones. Inflation is everywhere.

Alameda Post - A license plate loosely attached to a telephone pole.

In the PSA (public service announcement) department, did you lose a vehicle license plate? I think I was on Buena Vista Avenue when I saw this. Or was it Santa Clara? I think I am getting old.

Alameda Post - A photo of a home window. Someone has drawn a cartoon dog.

I got a big kick out of the canine caricature on the window of this house. Not to be an art critique but shouldn’t the paws be facing down?

Alameda Post - An artwork hung on the outside of a home. In the frame is a black and white photo of a man holding a clapperboard. Text reads, "Surveillance" all activities are being filmed. Now playing.

I found this picture on the side of the house and couldn’t decide if it was a commercial for a Ring door camera or a “Candid Camera” revival show. Any reader thoughts?

Alameda Post - Mouf the dog lays on hardword floors next to a chewed up small paper cup.

In case you’re wondering what’s the second thing I do when I get up in the morning… it’s having my HC bring me a puppuccino from one of the local java houses. The empty cup makes a great chew toy.
