AUSD Looks Forward to the Completion of Four Major Facilities Projects

Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) has announced that four major facilities projects are expected to be finished by the end of this school year, thanks to the generosity of Alameda citizens.

The upgrade of Alameda High School’s Kofman Auditorium upgrades should be completed this coming December. That project includes: replacing the production lighting and controls, improving the AV system, constructing four new backstage dressing rooms, replacing the stage fire curtain and balcony guardrails, and installing new battens for hanging heavy drapery above the stage.

AUSD also expects the new athletic field at Encinal High School to be completed in December. That project includes a new turf field, regulation track, new lights, new bleachers and a press box, and facilities for field events. The district acknowledges that some community members were hoping the field would be open for the Island Bowl on November 7, but the finishing touches are still being completed.

The new AHS Swim Center is scheduled to open in the summer of 2026. This facility will include a competition swimming pool and practice pool, new lighting and scoreboard, an outdoor shower area, perimeter fencing and gates, and all new mechanical equipment. As part of this project, the school will also get a new tennis court.

If you have driven by Wood Middle School of late, you have seen how quickly this campus is growing! The new two-story classroom building, administration/library building, gymnasium, and access road are expected to be complete in time for students and staff to move in for the 2026-27 school year.

Once Wood Middle School moves into its new campus, the temporary campus at the former Lum Elementary site will house students and staff from Otis Elementary School, while that campus is completely rebuilt. That project will include a new two-story classroom building, administration offices, and library/media center, as well as a new shade structure, playground, and outdoor learning spaces. AUSD is currently exploring bus service to and from the old campus to the Lum site to help families get their students to and from school.

All of these projects were funded by Measure B, a $298 million facilities bond that Alameda voters approved in 2022. AUSD is deeply grateful for the support of the community in helping to create safe, modern instructional spaces and school facilities that reflect our community’s deep support for children and families.
