Over the weekend, Alameda Police Department (APD) Animal Control Officer Emily Crum responded to Ferry Point for the report of a kitten in distress. Once on scene, ACO Crum discovered that a tiny—and terrified—tuxedo kitten had fallen approximately 10 feet down a metal pipe in an abandoned field.
Because of the pipe’s depth, getting him out posed a challenge. But with some serious animal control ingenuity, ACO Crum eventually rescued the frightened feline.
Once he was safely out of the hole, “it was clear this little guy had been through quite the adventure,” APD reported on Facebook. “He was covered in wet rust, and his paw pads were raw from his many unsuccessful attempts to climb out on his own.”
After a warm bath and some TLC, this adorable little guy was affectionately named Rusty. And the best news is that Rusty has already found a foster home with an APD dispatcher—the very same dispatcher who originally answered the call about Rusty in distress.
“It really does take a village,” APD stated in the report. “In this case, a passerby, a dispatcher, a patrol sergeant, and an Animal Control Officer all worked together to make one furry friend’s life a little sweeter.”
Many people commented on the report, profusely thanking APD and especially ACO Crum for successfully rescuing the adorable little kitten, who may not have survived otherwise.
“Once again the APD and other Alameda people have succeeded with an incredible outcome,” one commenter wrote. “Thank you all for caring so much. So proud to be an Alamedan.”
Another person added, “What a happy ending to what could’ve been quite the opposite.”
And of course, most of the comments shared in the gratitude: “Thank you for saving that little precious soul.”
