Celebration starts early with activities for travelers on August 2
San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) is celebrating National Aviation Day early this year. Ahead of the August 19 holiday, the airport will offer aviation-related activities and goodies for passengers in the Terminal 1 – Terminal 2 connector this coming Friday, August 2, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Passengers, including children, can enjoy a number of free activities, including:
- Free popcorn and airport-branded promotional items (while supplies last).
- A station dedicated to making and coloring paper airplanes, as well as a game where travelers may attempt to fly their paper aircraft through hoops.
- A separate coloring station where passenger artwork will be displayed on the walls after the conclusion of the event.
- A special aviation-themed music playlist available via QR code.
- Aviation Day photo stations for taking selfies.
The airport also will feature winning photos, both in terminals and online, from a contest held June 12 through July 12 in coordination with National Aviation Day. Members of the public were invited to submit their OAK-related photos for a chance to be featured.
“We look forward to celebrating National Aviation Day with passengers at our in-terminal event this coming Friday,” says Craig Simon, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. Simon noted that National Aviation Day was established in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and “reminds all of us of the incredible developments that have been made in the field of aviation throughout history.”
Those who will not be flying through OAK on August 2 can observe the activities by following San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport on social media, including Facebook and Instagram.
