At its special public meeting on March 21, the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) Board of Education approved hiring Angela Barrett as the new principal of Alameda High School. Barrett will take the place of Robert Ithurburn, who is retiring after leading the school for 10 years.
An experienced administrator, Barrett currently serves as the assistant principal at Piedmont Middle School. Prior to that she worked as assistant principal for Nea’s grades 6-12 program in Alameda and vice principal at Envision Academy High School in Oakland. She also taught English at Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton and City Arts and Technology High School in San Francisco.
“We were impressed with Ms. Barrett’s commitment to academic rigor and relationships, passion for equitable instructional practices, and dedication to communication and collaboration from the very start,” said AUSD Superintendent Pasquale Scuderi. “We look forward to introducing her to Alameda High’s staff, students, and families over the coming months.”
A panel of 18 stakeholders, including AHS staff, students, parents, and other AUSD principals, interviewed the initial field of candidates and sent finalists to a second internal panel where a final recommendation to the Board of Education was made.
Barrett received BAs in English Literature and Creative Writing from Cal State San Bernardino. She holds two Masters degrees, one in Education from Cal State East Bay and one in Educational Leadership from Mills College. She also received her administrative credential from Mills College.
“It is an honor to join Alameda High School,” Barrett said. “I am a dedicated leader who is committed to actively listening to students, families, and staff as we continue to create an equitable, high-quality educational experience for all students.”
AUSD Board of Education President Jennifer Williams said, “We are grateful to Mr. Ithurburn’s leadership over the last decade, and especially grateful for the many student-centered programs he and his team initiated and nurtured over the years. We look forward to getting to know Ms. Barrett during the upcoming transition and supporting her vision and work.”
