Alameda Scouts Collect Over Nine Tons of Food For Island Neighbors

Alameda Scouts collected 18,477 pounds of food for Alameda Food Bank during this year’s Scouting for Food Drive—one-and-a-half tons more than last year. The non-perishable food and other items donated by residents throughout Alameda on Saturday, November 15, will help put meals on the tables of the 1,400 families who turn to the food bank for help each week.

The Scouts left door hangers on homes a week earlier, asking residents to donate canned goods, coffee, tea, condiments, international foods and other unexpired non-perishable foods—as well as diapers, baby wipes, and small paper goods. And the community more than delivered this past weekend.

“This will go a long way toward replenishing supplies that were depleted by the recent government shutdown and temporary suspension of SNAP benefits,” said Alameda Food Bank Warehouse Manager Josh England.

The food bank also received $2,000 in cash donations during the drive. Those who wish to may still donate at the food bank’s Scouting for Food donation page. Every $1 donated in this fundraiser provides $7 worth of food to ensure that those facing food insecurity in our community have access to nutritious meals.

Alameda Food Bank is located at 677 West Ranger Avenue.
