Alameda Chamber Foundation Awards 15 Scholarships

Over a dozen local graduating high school seniors were awarded $33,000 in scholarships at an event aboard the USS Hornet on Thursday, June 30, 2022. Fourteen students received $2,000 each to further their educational or career goals. The top winner, Henry Mills, now a graduate of Alameda High School, was awarded the Wilma Chan Scholarship for $5,000. Updated 12:10 p.m. to list correct high school.

The scholarships were awarded by the Alameda Chamber Foundation, which is a nonprofit subsidiary of the Alameda Chamber & Economic Alliance. The foundation serves to educate those who live and work in Alameda, and provides scholarships, ongoing leadership development, and education programs.

Several of the scholarships were prioritized for students planning a degree or career in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. Judges selected the scholarship recipients based on criteria including academic persistence, community involvement and service, and career interest.

Students were required to submit two years of high school transcripts, a list of community service activities, an essay describing career interests and future contributions to Alameda’s community, and a letter of recommendation.

The students who won $2,000 scholarships were Ava McCracken, Brian Lin, David Jordy Velasquez, Emily Farley, Haley Molina, Iris Phillips, Jacob Ackiron, Jenna Chan, Jenna Elaidy, Kristen Wong, Madison Tiaffay, Marie Anne Santos Navarro, Pui Sze Ko, and Sylvie Lam. Unfortunately, not all students were able to attend the ceremony aboard the USS Hornet.

A combination of the Alameda Chamber & Economic Alliance’s Board of Directors and Community Judges evaluated applications that had been stripped of any identifying markers. The judges participating this year were Dr. Chris Wachira, Wachira Group; John Lipp, Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter; Vicki Sedlack, Alameda Education Foundation; and Dr. Cindy Acker, The Child Unique Montessori.
