Mastick Senior Center is now presenting its 24th art exhibit showcasing multimedia works by Mastick art class students and instructors, as well as seniors from the entire Mastick community.
The current display features a total of 159 original pieces by 88 Mastick artists, comprised of drawings, paintings, Chinese ink painting, quilts, collages, ceramics, mosaics, weavings, knitted pieces, stained glass, and jewelry.
“It’s inspiring to see the breadth of creativity and talent produced by our seniors, from artists who have been producing art for decades, to those exploring a newfound passion,” said Mastick Recreation Manager Morace McKay.
Artistic expression benefits seniors in multiple ways, from improving cognitive functions such as memory and concentration to providing emotional well-being by reducing stress. Creating art also fosters a sense of accomplishment and social interaction.
The exhibit will be displayed through Friday, August 15, throughout the Mastick center, including the lobby, office, dining, game and media rooms. Viewing hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Some of the pieces are for sale, with 15% of the proceeds going towards supporting art classes at Mastick.
Mastick Senior Center, a division of the Alameda Recreation & Parks Department (ARPD), has more than 4,300 members and provides a variety of programs and services in the areas of health, education, and recreation to meet the needs of adults ages 50 and older.
