Sadly, after 32 years of service to Alameda, Second Home is closing their doors. I, like many others, have purchased consignment items over the years. As a landlord I have sent many new tenants to find much needed items.
Thank you, Suzette, for opening and running this store for all those years.

Many of us try to find ways to eliminate wasting Mother Earth’s depleting resources. Here are a few things that you may find useful.
Stop buying plastic garbage bags. Just dump your recyclable garbage and trash in the liners without adding another layer of plastic (bag) in the receptacle. Then just empty the liner directly into the outside garbage bins. And yes, you’ll have to rinse them out from time to time.
More on plastic: Stop buying saran wrap. There are several types of food wraps on the market now made of cloth covered in beeswax, which can be used like saran wrap over and over again, for about a year. It can be cut too many sizes to whatever uses you need it for, and they come in small rolls. I use Meli wrap and Bees Wax food wrap, available online.
If you cook and use vegetable broth or chicken broth, save your vegetable skins or chicken bones (separately) in a bag in the freezer until you have enough to boil down, strain and put in glass jars for your own lovely versions of broth. Refrigerate until you use them.
Free pickles, anyone? When your jar of pickles is almost empty, buy a cucumber and slice it thinly. Set them aside. Take out the pickles that are in the jar and boil the pickle juice in your microwave. Put the cucumber slices into the boiled pickle juice jar and cover it with the old pickles. Leave the jar on a trivet until it seals (pops!). When this has cooled, put it in the refrigerator and in about a week you will have a full jar of yummy pickles for free.
