Drivers: Go Slow as School Starts

The first day of school for Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) is August 11, and we have been busy preparing campuses, collaborating with returning school site staff, and onboarding new employees. It is an exciting time for all of us!

We periodically remind drivers to take extra care around our schools throughout the year. This is especially crucial during the first several weeks of school, when families and students around school campuses tend to be especially distracted.

Please avoid driving by our campuses during the morning drop-off time (roughly 8:20 to 9 a.m., depending on the school) and pick-up time (generally between 2:30 and 3:45 p.m.), unless it’s absolutely necessary. And if you must drive by during those times, please drive slowly, keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists, and follow all traffic rules. School zones are the best places to practice your very best driving.

For more tips on driving safely around school zones, please see the AUSD “Getting to School” webpage.

Facility updates

All of our major facility projects are on schedule now. The upgrades at Kofman Auditorium should be complete late this fall (2025). We expect the new athletic field at Encinal Jr. & Sr. High School to be ready for play in December 2025 or January 2026. Wood Middle School’s new campus will be finished—and beautiful!—in June 2026, and we expect the new swim center at Alameda High School to be finished that summer as well.

Board meetings

We’re happy to report that at its June 24 meeting, the Board of Education approved naming the scoreboard in Alameda High’s new gym after Richard Bullock, Sr., a longtime supporter of youth sports here on the Island. A naming ceremony will be held once the sign is created (it is on order now), and we will be sure to publicize it widely.

The first Board of Education meeting will be held on August 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Niel Tam Educational Center, 2060 Challenger Drive, and also via Teams. Presentations include a 45-Day Budget Revision and updates on the district’s Heat Mitigation in Classrooms project as well as an update on new education policies and direction at the federal level. The agenda is available on the AUSD Agendas and Minutes webpage.
