AUSD Announces Upcoming Student Music Performances

Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) is delighted to announce that musical performance season is now opening. In addition to the annual concerts at our elementary, middle, and high schools, this year features classic musicals at both high schools.

Music educators from across Alameda have partnered to present the “All-City Band Concert” for many years. This year’s performance will be on March 7. Photo Alameda High School.

This past Tuesday night, the Alameda High School Jazz Band performed at the storied Yoshi’s jazz venue in Jack London Square, Oakland. We’re grateful to Yoshi’s for providing this opportunity to young musicians from around the Bay Area.

On Friday, March 7, students from schools across the island will perform in the annual Alameda All-City Band and Orchestra Concert. This showcase will feature sixth- through 12th-grade band students from Lincoln Middle School, Wood Middle School, Academy of Alameda, Encinal Jr./Sr. High School, and Alameda High School. The free concert, which will include a wide range of musical numbers, will be held in the Alameda High School gymnasium at 7 p.m.

Following that, Encinal High School students will be presenting the high-octane musical, Mamma Mia, on March 14, 15, 20, 21, and 22. All shows are at 7 p.m. at the Encinal Jr. & Sr. School gymnasium. Featuring ABBA hits such as “Super Trouper” and “Take a Chance on Me,” Mamma Mia tells the story of a young woman who is simultaneously preparing for her wedding and searching for her father. Tickets are available online.

March 28 will be opening night for Alameda High School’s production of Roger & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. First aired by CBS in 1957 with Julie Andrews as the mistreated stepdaughter, then in 1965 with an 18-year-old Lesley Ann Warren in the lead role, it was made  into a 1997 Disney feature film starring Brandy. (Here’s a spot of trivia for Cinderella fans—February 22 marked the 60th anniversary of the first CBS broadcast of Cinderella featuring Lesley Ann Warren.) The musical features classic songs such as “In My Own Little Corner,” “Ten Minutes Ago,” and “Impossible.”

Cinderella will be performed at Alameda High School’s Frederick Chacon Little Theater on March 28, 29, and April 3, 4, and 5 at 7 p.m., and on March 30 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online.

We encourage the community to attend these events to see the remarkable theatrical, musical, and dance talents of our young people.
