Emergency responders in Alameda handled two serious calls for help over the weekend with fatal consequences.
On Saturday afternoon around 4:30 p.m., Alameda Police received a call to report that the caller had seen someone fall from the Civic Center Parking Garage, located at the corner of Oak Street and Central Avenue. When APD officers responded to the CVS parking lot next door, they found a man who was unresponsive and unconscious.
Alameda Fire Department attempted resuscitation on the subject. He was taken to Highland Hospital where he died. APD’s investigation is ongoing as they review footage from CVS’s cameras and speak with the victim’s family. Police did not state what caused the victim to fall.

On Sunday, at around 1 p.m., a boat capsized near the Harbor Bay Ferry terminal. A caller to APD reported four people in the water. When APD officers responded to the scene, they helped a passerby to bring one man ashore. The man was in cardiac arrest and needed resuscitation. AFD personnel took over the efforts once they arrived on scene. The person was transported to Alameda Hospital, but did not survive, according to police.
AFD responders were assisted by the US Coast Guard, who provided helicopter support. AFD deployed seven rescue swimmers into the water along with the AFD Fire Boat. Rescue swimmers located three other male victims in the water, ranging from approximately 100 feet to several hundred yards offshore. The three men were brought onto the shore and transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and evaluation.

It is not yet clear what caused the boat to take on water—it may have been a mechanical issue. APD continues to investigate in cooperation with the three rescued men. The Post will follow up on both of these stories if and when new information becomes available.
