Alameda Shooting Leaves Four Dead, Infant Fighting for Life

APD Chief Joshi reports father arrested after killing in-laws, wife, and 6-year-old son; 1-year-old in critical condition.

A man shot and killed four family members, including a 6-year-old child, and critically wounded a 1-year-old infant in their Alameda home Wednesday night, according to Alameda Police Chief Nishant Joshi. The Chief held a press conference on Thursday morning on the steps of the Alameda Police Department (APD) headquarters on Oak Street to provide details of the horrific crime.

The suspect was arrested at the scene on Kitty Hawk Road after APD officers responded to a 911 call from a neighbor just before 9 p.m., Chief Joshi said.

Shane Parrish Killian, 54, was booked at Santa Rita Jail on Thursday morning, according to an SFGate report. He faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, according to jail records, that report stated.

“This is a tragic and sad incident,” Chief Joshi said at the press conference. “I have some idea of what happened, and this person’s actions were those of a coward.”

The victims include the suspect’s father-in-law, mother-in-law, wife, and 6-year-old son. The 1-year-old child remains in critical condition.

Officers arrived to find the father-in-law suffering from at least one gunshot wound outside the residence. As they were tending to him, the suspect emerged from the front door and was immediately detained.

Upon entering the home, police discovered several additional victims with multiple gunshot wounds. The Chief stated that multiple firearms were recovered from inside the residence.

The family had recently moved to the address, Joshi said, though it was unclear if they relocated from within Alameda or another community. Police had been called to the address once previously, for a theft report.

The police department has called in peer support teams to assist officers coping with the tragedy. “Yeah, our officers are hurt,” the Chief said. “They are doing the best that they can, but they’re going to stay focused on making sure that this family receives the justice that they deserve.

Investigators are still working to determine a motive for the shooting. The suspect is being interviewed by detectives, but Joshi did not disclose details of their conversations.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are reviewing body-worn camera footage that may have captured statements from the victims before they died.
