The Alameda Kiwanis Club’s August 7 evening meeting had a special purpose, as it presented community grants to 11 nonprofit organizations here in Alameda—Midway Shelter, Girls Inc. of the Island City, Christ Church Alameda Warming Shelter, Rhythmix Cultural Works, Alameda Boys & Girls Club, Bay Area Music Project, the Alameda Post, the Foodbank Players, Alameda Adaptive Arts, Island Hacks, and the Alameda Civic Ballet.
Some of the recipients were repeat awardees with programs that are of ongoing importance to the community. Others were awarded for the first time this year, including Island Hacks for sponsoring a high school coding event; the Alameda Post for publishing local news online; and the Foodbank Players for fundraising with “Our Town” production. Music programs for children, youth, and people with disabilities also figured prominently.
Alameda Kiwanis Foundation community grants are entirely funded by a local Kiwanis fundraiser. This year’s fundraiser was the annual Kiwanis Chili Cookoff, held January 27 at the Albert H. DeWitt Officers’ Club on Alameda Point. The sellout crowd raised more than $20,000 to be distributed as grants to local nonprofits.
