Pet of the Week for August 29, 2026
Meet Penny, a beautiful 2-year-old Mastiff mix with soulful eyes and a whole lot of experiences to live. When Penny first arrived, she was a little unsure of the world, but she’s come a long way since then. These days, she’s discovering that there’s a lot to love, especially when there’s a good walk, a tennis ball, or some water involved.
Penny has been at the shelter for a bit, but thankfully, she has a volunteer who makes sure she gets regular outings. After several hikes together, it’s clear just how much this volunteer loves her and how much Penny has to offer the right person.
They’ve explored the trails at Lake Chabot, tackled some steep climbs, and enjoyed plenty of time taking in the sights and smells along the way. On one hike, Penny even seemed to notice that her volunteer needed to slow down. As they headed downhill, she instinctively walked slowly beside her, without being asked. It was a small moment, but one that said a lot about Penny.
She also happens to be a serious water enthusiast. Give her water and a tennis ball, and Penny is in her happy place. She loves splashing around, playing, and tossing her toys into the water.
Once Penny feels comfortable with someone, she is affectionate, playful, and eager to engage. She’s the kind of dog who wants to experience life with her person, whether that means going on a hike or simply hanging out together. Her volunteer keeps coming back because she knows Penny is special. Now all Penny needs is someone else to take a chance on her.
A foster home could give Penny the opportunity to relax and show more of her personality. The right adopter could give her something even better—a place to call home.
Penny is still waiting. Maybe you’re the person she’s been waiting for. Meet Penny at FAAS, 1590 Fortmann Way, Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The shelter is closed daily from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. for naptime.
