This holiday season, Greenway Golf is hosting its first annual shoe drive in partnership with Shoes That Fit, an award-winning nonprofit organization with a mission to provide new athletic shoes to children in need so they can attend school with dignity and joy, prepared to learn, play, and thrive.
During its holiday shoe drive, Greenway Golf is matching every donation for the first 100 pairs of shoes. The goal is to provide shoes for 200 children and teens served by Alameda Point Collaborative, All Good Living Foundation, and Camp EDMO at Ruby Bridges Elementary. These organizations all provide services for low-income Alameda and East Bay families, including youth who are homeless or transitioning out of homelessness.
“A new pair of shoes can be a life-changing event for a child,” Shoes That Fit notes on its website. “School attendance, self-esteem, and behavior improve. Physical activity increases. Smiles return. All from an often-overlooked item—a good pair of shoes.”
Community support helps ensure that our well-deserving youth here in Alameda have much-needed footwear as they head back to school after the winter break.
“Access for all children to sport and to the vital health benefits of green space is central to all of our no-cost youth programs,” Greenway Golf officials note. “Without a good pair of shoes, kids are left out of opportunities for play that nurture learning, build confidence and support physical fitness.”
Greenway Golf, which manages the Corica Park golf facility, will match donations up to $3,000. $30 will provide one pair of shoes for a needy student, $60 will provide two pairs, and $90 will provide three pairs. Donate online today!
