Standing room only
As June comes to an end here in Alameda, my campaign for mayor is starting to gain steam. I have started getting my campaign signs delivered, and they are showing up in supporters’ yards. Special thanks to Beverly Chan Woo for being the first person to display my sign. If you would like a MOUF FOR MAYOR sign, I am asking folks to make a $25 donation to the FAAS Starfish Fund which provides money to cover emergency medical services for all the animals at the shelter. Send your request to my HC (human companion) at [email protected].
In my continuing coverage of the failed animal shelter building and exactly how inefficient it is, my HC visited the shelter to assist with laundry and found the lobby area full of people waiting to do business. Keep in mind this was a weekday. There is no room for chairs in this tiny space. Imagine what this lobby is like on the weekend.
The shelter also serves as a drop-off for pet supplies and equipment that is free to residents. Unfortunately, there is no storage space and these donations are being stored outside in the parking lot.
To the City of Alameda: WE NEED A NEW LARGER BUILDING.
Moving on to this week’s activities, the folks at Alameda Rocks did a major drop of painted rocks on Alameda Avenue near my house. Bugs and celestial bodies were on display in the planting strip.
I came across a lemonade stand on Central Avenue that was pretty well organized. Not sure if the drinks were 5 dollars or 5 cents. A decimal point would have been nice. I guess staffing was an issue since this particular enterprise was self-serve.
With all the excitement around the FIFA World Cup, I was surprised that there were not more signs noting this international event. I did find a street banner.
I have intentionally diverted many of my walks to include Grand Street so I could capture the many houses that put up Independence Day decorations. I was a little disappointed at the absence of decorated yards that I recall from previous years. Fortunately, there were displays on Buena Vista Avenue, Otis Drive, and Dayton Avenue.
And for all of the Alameda residents who hail from Puerto Rico, I found a cute display on the dashboard of a car that I wanted to share.
With the nation’s birthday right around the corner, I want to wish our country a very happy 250th birthday.
