“Alameda snow” storm hits Island City

Alameda Post - underneath a tree on an Alameda street, a huge number of yellow leaves litter the ground

This week saw a major storm hit our city, dumping a record-breaking amount of “Alameda snow” on cars and a bunch of leaves which clogged up storm drain grates. (For readers who are not from Alameda, the snow is the falling leaves from the street trees.)

Alameda Street Vacuum

I want to give a big double-paw high four to the City of Alameda Public Works Department and the crew that operates the leaf sucker-upper thing. They were right on it when the storm passed, clearing the streets.

Turkey Crossing

It was a wet week leading up to Thanksgiving Day, but the turkeys didn’t seem to mind the rain. They also appeared to be circling their wagons in preparation for possible threats as Alamedans prepare for a traditional turkey dinner. I think the appropriate saying is, “Safety in numbers.”

An Alameda Skateboarder

This is the last of my three reports honoring the fall season and the long-lost holiday called Thanksgiving. Given the weather, limited subject matter, and the fact that I had a Wednesday deadline (since the Alameda Post is off for the long holiday) to get this report in, it is not as in-depth as I might have liked. Still, there were a few oddities on the street, like this guy on the extra-long skateboard that was practicing for his gondola operator’s license.

Alameda Post - a Maine license plate says Alameda

On one of my walks, I saw a license plate with the word ‘ALAMEDA’ on it. What’s so strange about that, you might ask?? It was a Maine license plate! I have heard of folks registering their cars out of state to avoid paying California vehicle registration fees, but that is going a little too far… pun intended.

Alameda Post - from inside a window or a door, the viewer can see a cat is perched outside on furniture on a porch

I am still trying to figure what the neighbor’s cat was doing on my deck sitting on a chair in the middle of a downpour. I tried to communicate with them via a string of loud barks and paw gestures, but they had zero impact. My HC saved the day when he went out to check on them and the darn thing scurried off. My HC has that effect on most people!

Alameda Post - in one photo, a single maple leaf lays on the ground. In another, a dog's snout is visible investigating a mosaic of fallen leaves

During the limited time that the sun did come out, I found a nice still life shot of a morning leaf after the rain and another one of those fallen leaf mosaic pieces. Look at all those colors. So beautiful.

Alameda Post - leftover Halloween decorations

Finally, I was overjoyed to find one last vestige of Halloween 2024 in the form of a pumpkin, and it made my day. By the way, there are only 334 days left to the very best holiday of the year. I am already working on my costume for the big day. How about you?

Happy T-Day all and onward into the holiDAZE!
