National Donut Day

The top story of the week was a toss-up between National Donut Day (June 6) and the tomato seedlings that need to get in the ground. I opted to lead with donut day for obvious reasons. While Alameda has many donut shops, and I am sure all of them do a good job of getting out a quality product, I headed over to Donut Petit on Santa Clara Avenue near Webster Street because my HC (human companion) is an aspiring vegan, and they offer a plant-based donut.

I support his endeavor as long as he recognizes my protein needs, since tofu is not my first choice in protein options—but strawberries are, along with custard filling. YUM!

The other story involves the large number of tomato plant seedlings that are taking over my deck area. It wasn’t that long ago that the seeds had just sprouted and fit in one tray. HC transplanted these seedlings into small pots and now they need to get into the ground. If you want free tomato plants, please, please email my HC at [email protected]. This offer is good for the first 98 people who apply.

Alameda Post - a construction site

I revisited the site of the new Alameda High pool to see the progress, and it appears the project hit a snag and construction was stopped due to some soil issues that needed remediating. The official word is that the project was back on track as of June 6.

While the pool project is delayed, the guys working on 1800 Central Avenue are making good progress. It took me a second to realize that the workers were not putting up real wood shingles. I guess once you paint them brown nobody would know the difference.

Alameda Post - a BMW logo on a car with pink details

And, what’s up with the pink and white BMW emblem? I dug a little deeper (figuratively speaking) and found out that this is an aftermarket sticker available from Etsy.

Alameda Post - a Versailles Ave street sign and an old fashioned looking sign that says Versailles Station Historic Alameda Business District

I have noticed these Historic Alameda Business District signs along Encinal Avenue at different locations. How many stations were there and are they all marked with these signs?

Alameda Post - a yellow and red fuzzy looking plant called a Kangaroo Paw

I don’t have a regular “Plant of the Week” feature, but this week’s plant of the week is a Kangaroo Paw. Also known as Sword Lily, it is native to “guess which country?” Answer at the end of this report.

Alameda Post - photos of messages written on the windows of a minivan that say "Skyline Here I come," "Class of 2025," and "Felicidades Luna!" etc

In a rare display of joy, my HC was all excited about a car that had some graduation graffiti on it. Apparently, he went to Montera Junior High School and is an alum of Skyline High School. Both schools are located in the Oakland Hills, so this car was a long way from home.

Alameda Post - a fire hydrant with a crank and a hose attached

I think we can appreciate the inconvenience that all this street construction causes, but I have to draw the line where it interferes with my territory boundary marking activities. Someone’s going to be surprised when they use that handle.  LOL!

Looking forward to celebrating the longest day of the year on June 20,

P.S. The answer to the “Plant of the Week” question is Australia – home of the Kangaroo.
