Events centered on women, a walking tour, and family favorites
Happy March, Alameda! It’s Women’s History Month, and International Women’s Day is March 8. The Alameda Free Library is hosting a month of exciting events to celebrate, starting with two events highlighting women in STEM on Saturday, March 8. The same day, Alameda GrannyCon is headed to Park Street for a bingo-themed scavenger hunt to raise money for breast cancer prevention.
Our Community Events Calendar has a few other favorites on the schedule this week. On Saturday, March 8, and Sunday, March 9, the Alameda Post’s popular walking tours return for the season with a tour of the Gold Coast from Franklin Park to Bay Street. On Sunday, March 9, two family favorites are sure to entertain. Catch a sensory-friendly showing of Despicable Me 4 at the library, or reserve your ticket in advance for a popular performance by The Amazing Bubble Man at Rhythmix Cultural Works.

Women’s History Month Events – Alameda Main Library
Saturday, March 8
Celebrate Women’s History Month with the Alameda Free Library all month long, starting with two events on Saturday, March 8, at the Main Library, 1550 Oak Street. The day’s theme is Women in STEM.
- Noon-1:30 p.m.: Children eight and older are invited to “Fruit and Veggie Energy!” Come meet two local women engineers to learn about their careers. There will be a hands-on activity to “learn about the literal power of fruit and veggies.” Registration is required for this activity. - 2 – 3 p.m.: All ages are welcome at “Meet an Entomologist.” Learn about working with insects, and get a chance to ask a local entomologist your questions. Activities are designed for teens and older. No registration is required, and everyone is welcome!

GrannyCon 2025
Saturday, March 8
Alameda is celebrating International Women’s Day in style—Granny style that is! Join Alameda GrannyCon for a bingo-themed scavenger hunt around Park Street from 4 to 8 p.m. GrannyCon plans to offer some great raffle prizes, and an after party, too!
Enjoy drinks, eats, and good company during your stroll, all while raising funds for Breast Cancer Prevention Partners. At least 16 local businesses have agreed to participate, including Julie’s Coffee & Tea Garden, Saltbreaker, and See Spot Run.
Participants are encouraged to wear granny-themed attire. “All grannies welcome—glam-ma, cozy gran, or anything in between!” Tickets are available online for $39.99. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

History Walking Tour: Gold Coast — Franklin Park to Bay Street
Saturday, March 8 & Sunday, March 9
The Alameda Post’s popular History Walking Tours are back for a new season! Grab your comfy kicks for a tour of the Gold Coast from Franklin Park to Bay Street on Saturday, March 8, or Sunday, March 9 at 10 a.m. The tour begins and ends at Franklin Park.
Join award-winning Historian Dennis Evanosky for a leisurely walk that will leave you with a greater appreciation and understanding of Alameda’s history. This weekend’s walk will explore the development of Franklin Park, the influence of the electric streetcar, and the fascinating architecture of the area’s homes.
History Walking Tours generally last about 90 to 100 minutes and cover one to two miles. We suggest that you bring comfortable shoes, water, and sunscreen. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to attend. Tickets are $20 each, and kids under six are free. Grab your ticket for Saturday, March 8 or Sunday, March 9 online.

Sensory-Friendly Family Movie Matinee: Despicable Me 4
Sunday, March 9
Join the fun at the Alameda Main Library, 1550 Oak Street, for a sensory-friendly showing of Despicable Me 4 on Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. The free event will take place in the library’s Stafford Room.
The library takes several measures to ensure kids’ comfort during sensory-friendly movie showings:
- The lights are half on and half off.
- The movie volume is lowered.
- Captions are turned on.
- Fidget toys are available.
- Open seating and “wobble cushions” let kids move around.
Attendees are welcome to bring snacks, blankets, and pillows for the movie. The library will offer light refreshments free of charge.

The Amazing Bubble Man
Sunday, March 9
The Amazing Bubble Man performs hundreds of shows around the world every year, and he’s headed to Alameda for one show only on Saturday, March 9, from 3 to 4 p.m. at Rhythmix Cultural Works, 2513 Blanding Avenue.
Audience members will be delighted by the astounding bubble artistry—after all, he’s not called the Amazing Bubble Man for nothing. Prepare to be dazzled by bubbles inside bubbles, square bubbles, giant bubbles, bubble volcanos, tornado bubbles—so many bubble tricks that you never thought were possible.
