Backyard Growers thankful for volunteers, supporters who grow and share produce with neighbors and the Food Bank
To the Editor:
As this crazy chaotic year comes to a close, the Board members of Alameda Backyard Growers would like to give a big thanks to our many volunteers and donors that kept us focused on our mission of teaching people how to grow their own food, and sharing extra produce with neighbors in need via the Alameda Food Bank.
We are grateful to the 76 fruit tree owners who offered their extra fruit—including oranges, lemons, tangerines, persimmons and apples—for harvesting. Project Pick is on track to have donated over 7,000 pounds of fresh produce to the Alameda Food Bank in 2024. Most of these tree owners take good care of their trees because they know we’ll be back next year to collect more fruit. We’re also very thankful for all the volunteers who show up to harvest all this fruit.
We appreciate the ABG Free Seed Library project and the library owners who carefully tend the library “boxes,” and the folks who packed around 16,000 packets of seeds this year that were distributed to the community for growing in backyards, balconies, or wherever possible!
Finally, we’re sending a big thank you to donors who kept us afloat financially, keeping our Project Pick van running and stocked with picking tools, the Seed Libraries full of seeds, our guest speakers honored, and our news, resources, and information available to the community.
