Science, sanity and fusion
To the Editor:
I just read the letter of May 30 dissing Pacific Fusion’s project to build a test fusion energy facility in the Alameda Point industrial area, which also, along with the referenced Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists article, tried to paint a dismal picture about fusion energy in general.
I must say, it reminded me of articles and editorials I have read in the New York Times around the turn of the 20th century, warning of the terrible dangers of overhead electrical lines and how powered air flight was a pipedream for maybe one to 10 million years in the future. I hope nobody took the letter too seriously.
Many people across the political spectrum have finally come around to realize that nuclear power (fission) is a great way to go for much of our energy needs in the future. The scare stories about nuclear technology have somewhat abated as reality has cut through the fog. (Dealing with waste from windmills and solar farms will be actually more problematic than the much-hyped “nuclear waste.”)
Let’s hope reason will prevail as regards fusion. Maybe it won’t take 40 years of wandering in the wilderness for sanity to reign.
