A new ranking from GoDaddy’s Small Business Research Lab (formerly Venture Forward) puts Alameda in the national spotlight, not for its beautiful shoreline or small(ish) town charm, but for its entrepreneurship.
Alameda was among the top 10—well, it was number 10—in the country, along with big city entrepreneurial powerhouses such as San Francisco and Los Angeles. The 2025 ranking was determined from an analysis of cities with the highest number of new ventures created during the previous calendar year.

Here are some of the stats that made Alameda one of the top 10 cities for business:
- Total Population: 77,565.
- Active Business Growth: 6,300.
- Percentage Growth: 83%.
- Total Business Count (Q4 2024): 13,861.
According to the statisticians, Alameda’s 77,565 residents—including 60,761 adults—supported an average of 13,456 microbusinesses per month in late 2024. The city’s microbusiness density of 17.35 is almost three times the national average, reflecting a vibrant, innovation-friendly local economy.
To compile the ranking, researcher looked at where small businesses are forming fastest across the U.S., and determined that Alameda’s rise illustrates a growing national trend: Smaller cities are becoming big players in the startup world, and entrepreneurs are finding success in places that balance lifestyle and opportunity.
Alameda is a perfect example of that balance, the researchers found. With a tight-knit community, proximity to major Bay Area markets, and a culture that genuinely supports local business, it’s no surprise the Island City is becoming a magnet for innovation. From independent makers and artisan coffee shops to tech startups, the spirit of entrepreneurship is real—and thriving.

San Francisco topped the 2025 ranking, fueled by its deep-rooted tech culture, access to venture capital, and highly skilled workforce, but neither San Francisco nor Alameda would have made the top 10 in 2024. Both cities catapulted the Bay Area to this year’s leaderboard.
How did that happen? They “punched above their weight,” according to Gourav Pani, president, Independents at GoDaddy. Small businesses and small cities are proving to be vital to economic growth. And Alameda is now one of the top in the country.
