Joseph Bryan “Joe” Devine passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 26th, 2024, at his family home in Alameda, California. A devoted husband and father, Joe shared 42 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Susan Houghton Devine. Together, they raised three sons: Joey, Ryan (RIP), and Brendan.
Born and raised in San Francisco, Joey,(as he was known to family and friends, was a proud native of the city. He attended St. Brendan’s Grammar School, Hoover Middle School, and graduated from Archbishop Riordan High School in 1972. He went on to earn his degree from St. Patrick’s College in 1977.
Joe embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. Over the years, he was always full of surprising and interesting hobbies including executive chef, park ranger, internet detective, American Sign Language translator, Burning Man attendee, voracious reader, amateur San Francisco historian, proud Irish-American, and owner of more dress shirts than any man west of the Mississippi. Above all else, Joe cherished his roles as a husband and father—his favorite titles—and he poured his heart into his family, which included his extended family: Edward Dillon, Ivy McNally, and Anthony, Jocelyn, Gia Pinata, and many, many more.
Joey is also remembered fondly by his siblings: Denise, Kevin (RIP), Regina, Brian, Daniel, and Jacqueline, and many nieces and nephews. His warmth and humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially by the proprietors of all the Alameda coffee and donut shops and the hot dog stand outside of Home Depot.
A funeral service to honor Joe’s life will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 10 a.m. at St. Philip Neri Church, 3108 Van Buren Street, Alameda. A reception will follow to celebrate the life of a man who brought so much joy to those around him.
May Joey’s memory live forevermore in the hearts of those who love him.
