Mia Bonta: Mobile Driver’s Licenses, License Renewal, and Water Bills

District 18 Assemblymember Mia Bonta is urging constituents to securely add their California driver’s license or identification to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.

“This effort is an extension of California’s ongoing mobile driver’s license (mDL) pilot program designed to use new technology to provide residents with a convenient way to store their license in the digital age,” Bonta stated in her latest newsletter. She emphasized that a mobile driver’s license does not replace the requirement for an individual to carry a physical license behind the wheel.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles provides instructions online for adding a driver’s or identification to Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.

New rules for older drivers renewing their licenses

Bonta also announced that the State of California is now allowing eligible drivers over age 70 to renew licenses that expire in 2024 or later without taking the written knowledge test. However, these drivers will still be required to visit the DMV to undergo a vision exam and take an updated photo.

“All drivers have been required to take a written test once they turn 70 as a policy requirement and not a requirement of law,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon.

The purpose of skipping the written test for older drivers with no traffic violations is basically to ease the long lines and wait times at DMV offices.

“We are eliminating the written knowledge test for those without traffic violations on their record to improve customer service,” Gordon said. “If thousands fewer people need to visit the DMV, or can spend less time in an office, the people who need to take care of their business in one of our offices can be better served.”

Visit the California DMV website for additional information and exceptions to the new policy. Bonta noted that those who have concerns about the safety of drivers should call the DMV hotline at (800) 777-0133.

Payment plans for overdue water bills

For those who may have gotten behind on monthly water bills, Assemblymember Bonta noted that payment plans may be available. “East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD) is encouraging customers behind on their water bill to call (866) 403-2683 and participate in a payment plan to ensure continued water service,” Bonta stated in her newsletter.

“If you need support for any state-related service, program, or department, please contact my District Office,” she added. Assemblymember Bonta’s office is located at 1515 Clay Street, Suite 2204, Oakland. The phone number is 510-286-1670.
