Christ Episcopal Church in Alameda is launching a new Laundry Program, starting Sunday December 7, for participants of the parish’s Shower Program and guests at the Community Warming Shelter, which opened for the winter on Wednesday, December 3.

“This new ministry is made possible through the generosity of the Alameda community and the faithful support of Christ Church members and friends,” the church stated in a press release.
The church has operated the Warming Shelter as part of its Homeless Ministries for many years, offering overnight hospitality during the coldest and wettest months of the year, as well as providing showers year-round on Sundays and to shelter guests during the winter. “Over time it became clear that after guests showered they needed clean clothing to return to their day with dignity,” the church explained. “While we have offered fresh clothing, we also recognized a growing need to support our guests in a way that honors their own belongings and reduces unnecessary waste.”
The Laundry Program will provide free access to laundry services for shower and shelter guests as needed. Washing and returning guests’ own clothing is meant to uphold both environmental care and personal dignity.
“We are so grateful to the many people who made this laundry program possible—donors and volunteers and folks in the church and all around the community. This truly has been a group project,” said Christ Church Reverend Stephen McHale. “Thank you all so much for sharing some tangible love with our neighbors. Many of us take clean clothes for granted. Laundry is expensive but it’s important for comfort and dignity. We’re happy our volunteers can support this.”
The Laundry Program will primarily operate as part of the Christ Church Sunday afternoon Shower Program, staffed by volunteers committed to offering welcome, warmth, and respect to every guest.
Christ Church extended deep gratitude to the Alameda community for believing in this work and helping bring it to life. They will be blessing the new shower and laundry service on Sunday, December 7 at noon in the parish hall and welcome the community to join the celebration.
