Also supports Governor Newsom and Attorney General Bonta’s efforts to hold the federal administration accountable
The City of Alameda posted a statement to its social media accounts on February 6 addressing its Sanctuary City policy.
“The City remains committed to the values of dignity, inclusivity, and respect for all individuals, regardless of ethnic or national origin, gender, race, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, or immigration status,” read the post. “We are committed to upholding the Constitution and ensuring a safe community for everyone, consistent with the City’s Sanctuary City policy.”

The statement continued by expressing the City’s strong support of Governor Newsom and Attorney General Bonta’s recent efforts to safeguard California against the federal administration.
“Conflicting federal funding announcements have created a feeling of uncertainty in cities like Alameda, which depend on these funds for essential programs and projects, including transportation, infrastructure, and human services,” read the statement. “The City strongly supports Governor Newsom and Attorney General Bonta’s efforts to safeguard federal funds, challenge these illegal actions, and hold the federal administration accountable.”
The post also stated that the City is actively monitoring the fluid situation and its potential impacts on Alameda, and concluded with a promise to remain dedicated to serving the diverse community.
Earlier in the week, on February 3, a crowd gathered in front of City Hall to demand a reaffirmation of the 2017 resolution that declared Alameda a Sanctuary City.
“We want to call on the mayor and council to immediately hold a public hearing to reaffirm our Sanctuary City status and to strengthen it where needed,” one of the event’s organizers, Amos White, told the Alameda Post. “Because everyone belongs and we want to make that part of our policy.”
