It’s Official: Oakland Roots & Soul Will Play at Coliseum in 2025

On Friday, March 15, the Oakland Roots Sports Club got the big news local fans have been waiting for. Both the Roots and the Soul soccer teams will play their 2025 home matches at the Oakland Coliseum.

“Today, the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum Authority (OACCA) approved the Oakland Roots and Soul soccer teams to play their 2025 season home matches in the Coliseum Stadium,” Oakland Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan announced on the social media site formerly known as Twitter.

“The Roots and Soul radiate Oakland pride in the community and every time they step on the pitch,” Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao chimed in. “They are a model franchise and the Town’s global ambassadors to the soccer world.”

The Roots replied with thanks to both Kaplan and Thao, along with the entire community, for their support. “We can’t wait to see you and the entire community celebrating Oakland Roots and Soul goals in the Coliseum in 2025!”

The Coliseum Authority’s Friday morning vote was unanimous, 6-0.

The Roots will continue to play their 2024 home matches at Cal State East Bay’s Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, and the Soul will continue to play theirs at Merritt College in Oakland.

It is unclear what impact, if any, the scheduling of the Roots and Soul 2025 home matches will have on the city and Coliseum’s negotiations with the A’s to extend their lease beyond 2024 as they seek a relocation to Las Vegas, where their proposed stadium won’t open until 2028.
