Math Puzzle for December 20, 2024

Give us enough red tape and a place to stand, and we can stop the world

Alameda Post - a math diagram that uses a roll of tape in a dispenser. From the center of the replacement core to the outer edge of the replacement core/innermost part of the roll of tape is labeled Ri. From the outer edge of the replacement core/innermost part of the roll of tap to the outermost layer of the roll of tape is labeled Ro.

To prove its indispensability, a government bureaucracy uses red tape.
Standard rolls of red tape have an inside radius RI of 2 centimeters.
These same rolls have an outside radius RO of 5 centimeters.
Red tape has a thickness of t = 0.012495 centimeters.
Find the length L of red tape on one stifling roll.

L = _________ centimeters

The first correct answer to arrive at [email protected] wins a valuable gift card good for enough ice cream for two at Tucker’s Ice Cream. (You don’t need to be a government employee to win!)

Last week’s winner was Nancy Sabbatini with Total Value = $0.91.

Jeff Smith is a former Math teacher and a retired US Navy Lieutenant Commander. Reach him at [email protected].
