The river makes a turn right here
And comes back as it went,
Making a U in the mountainside
From years and years of weather.
That’s a bit like what your life can be
When you reach a certain point,
Then turn around, retracing steps
That put you where you are right now.
What’s hard to see, without a fright,
Are storms that blustered through,
That changed your life’s river’s course,
Ultimately changing you.
Stop looking back. The past is past.
Just deal with what’s ahead.
Your river taught you how to deal
With worlds you used to dread.
The storms that changed your river’s path
Helped you help everyone
Whose lives you touched so memorably
By being their only one.
So, thank you, and keep flowing on
Toward the twilight sky,
Which welcomes you with rainbow arms
As you watch your world go by.
