Under the Big Top: Queer Prom for LGBTQ+ Youth and Allies on May 8

A night of color, celebration, and community is coming to Alameda, as the Queer Teen Center (QTAC) and Alameda Pride present “Under the Big Top: Queer Prom 2026,” a carnival-themed prom created for LGBTQ+ youth and their allies in grades 6 through 12.

The free event on May 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Alameda Veterans Memorial Building, 2203 Central Avenue, invites young people from across the region (not just Alameda residents) to step into a vibrant, affirming space where self-expression is celebrated and everyone is welcome.

“Under the Big Top” will reimagine the traditional prom experience through a playful carnival lens, blending the magic of a classic fair with the joy and inclusivity of a queer-centered celebration. Attendees can expect a lively atmosphere filled with music, dancing, yummy complimentary snacks, and interactive activities like carnival-style games and fun raffle prizes.

For many LGBTQ+ youth, traditional school dances can be challenging environments where self-expression may feel limited or unsupported. At its core, Queer Prom is about creating a space where young people can feel seen, safe, and celebrated.

Organizers from Alameda Pride and QTAC emphasize the importance of providing inclusive programming for youth, particularly in spaces that center joy and community building. By hosting events like Queer Prom, they aim to foster a sense of belonging and connection among young people while also strengthening networks of support for LGBTQ+ youth and their allies.

Safety and accessibility are top priorities for organizers. The event will be staffed by supportive adults and volunteers committed to maintaining a respectful, welcoming environment for all attendees. Clear guidelines will be in place to ensure that everyone can enjoy the night comfortably and confidently.
