Season of the Witch
Well, it’s official! October marks the beginning of the best time of the year here in Alameda. Indian summer is in full swing and this past week, it was downright hot. My daytime walks were very limited due to the hot sidewalk, leaving only early morning and late night for those three-mile excursions. I have noticed that my shadow keeps getting taller and taller as the days get shorter and shorter.
Another event that marks the beginning of Halloween is the appearance of the pumpkin patch at Dan’s Produce. If squash is your thing, you need to head down to Oak Street and Central Avenue.
Every day, I have seen more Halloween decorations coming out. I was happy to see some old favorites return this year like the one on Grand Street at Alameda Avenue.
There were a few “modest” efforts to acknowledge the season, and I was touched by the little person that wished me a happy Halloween in chalk.
There was a also new inflatable pirate ship/dragon combo that I had not seen before. I am amazed at the creativity and engineering that goes into these decorations. One pirate mate is waving a lantern while the captain is steering the ship away from the fire breathing dragon. AWESOME!!
This week, I found a few more campaign signs for those running in the local Alameda election. One sign was for EBMUD Water Board and the other was for the City Council. Good luck.
I have said that I am a nonpartisan canine, and the BE-V does not support any candidate (my Human Companion excepted), but a Harris for President lawn sign caught my eye because it wasn’t that boring navy-blue HARRIS/WALZ sign, and I liked the way the diffused sun from the tree lit it up.
I found these words of inspiring wisdom on the street which reminded me of the COVID times when my HC and Bear would find sayings like these on Alameda sidewalks and include them in the weekly reports.
While I hate to end on a negative note, I simply cannot control myself. On one of my night outings, I was walking around the Kohl’s store when I saw it. Mind you, it is only October 6, and there are holiday displays going up!!! I guess buying a snowman or having a Santa on the table is one way to beat the 90+ degree weather we are having?
I take solace in knowing that there are only 25 days to the greatest holiday ever.
Stay cool,
