In a number of my past reports, you have seen me rant about vehicles blocking the sidewalk and forcing folks to walk in the street. While this is more of an inconvenience for some people, for those individuals who have mobility issues, it can be downright dangerous.
In addition to these mobile obstacles that residents must navigate around, there are also a number of natural and dynamic barriers present on Alameda sidewalks. These consist of trees and shrubs that were planted close to the sidewalk that have not been trimmed back. There are numerous examples around the city, and I have provided a few examples.
Of course, the problem of vehicles blocking pedestrian right-of-ways still exists, like the van that blocked the entire sidewalk right next to the recessed loading dock the driver could have used. Go figure?
This week, new or unusual autos appeared on several of my walks. It started with the VW EV Camper Van on Oak Street. This sleek looking machine is all-electric and runs around $65K. I couldn’t see the inside so if someone can send me pictures of the inside, I will include them in my next report.
The other vehicle I came across this week was at the opposite end of the “sleek” spectrum. This little blue subcompact had all the basic necessities. Well, it doesn’t have a front license plate holder, which is required in California, but it has side mounted turn signal lights. This little guy had no manufacturer or model name. If you know anything about this vehicle, I am all ears.
Over at Alameda High, there is a big security project going on in the form of tall metal fencing at the main pedestrian entrances on Central Avenue and gates across the driveways on Oak and Walnut streets.
This follows the same type of security upgrade over at the Phillips Academy that was completed last month. It’s good to see these organizations being proactive when it comes to the safety of our youth.
On a brighter note, there was some nice chalk art on one walkway and a whimsical garden art installation over on San Antonio Avenue.
I will close out this week’s report with a PSA regarding a lost “creeper.” I am not referring to the human type, but rather the automobile type that has some sentimental value. There is a $200 reward so it’s worth the effort to locate this item.
Good luck in your search.
