Cooper Teare Classic Alameda 10-Miler and 8K

Saturday, August 9

Lace up your running shoes for this quintessentially Alameda foot race. On Saturday, August 9, runners will set off from Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach for the Cooper Teare Classic Alameda 10-Miler and 8K. Races begin at 7 a.m.

Formerly known as the Alameda 10-Miler, the annual race has been renamed in honor of Cooper Teare. Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School (SJND) writes on their Facebook page, “A proud SJND graduate, Cooper went on to star at the University of Oregon, winning two NCAA national championships, setting school and 8K records, and earning the title of 2022 USA Outdoor 1500m Champion.” Festivities for the weekend include a Meet and Greet with the hometown hero at Corica Park, 1 Clubhouse memorial Drive, on Friday, August 8.

In addition to a new name, the races have a fresh course this year. Participants can expect lots of beautiful ocean views from Crown Memorial Beach, down Shoreline Drive, and to the Harbor Bay Ferry Terminal on Bay Farm Island. After the race, runners with extra energy are invited to participate in a Crown Beach Volunteer Cleanup. Volunteers will receive free food and goodies from REI.

Registration is $48.70 for the 8K and $85.50 for the 10-Miler. Participants also have the option to participate in a “Virtual 8K” for $43.40. Get more information online.

Women’s Pinball Tournament

Sunday, August 10

After a full week of working 9 to 5, get ready for a Women’s Pinball Tournament featuring the Dolly Parton pinball machine at the Pacific Pinball Museum (PPM), 1510 Webster Street. The tournament is set to start at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 10. Signups begin at 2 p.m.

“Yes, we’re launching a game that originally came out in 1979, but who cares!” writes PPM. Dolly’s machine is currently featured in the PPM’s new “Behind the Backglass” exhibit, which celebrates women who have shaped pinball through the years.

“I hope that people  appreciate and recognize not only the woman who did work in this industry and did make so many of these many iconic games, but I hope they take it into their own lives and start to recognize the many things women do…” Museum Manager Brianna Devlin told the Alameda Post.

The tournament is open to women and nonbinary players of all ages. Players of all skill levels are welcome. Tournament players will receive discounted museum admission tickets for $10. Entrance to the tournament is an additional $2.
