All Around Alameda – Bingo and Beyond

Three bingo opportunities, free climate performances, and a string quartet in a garden

Grab your daubers! This week in Alameda, bingo enthusiasts will have three opportunities to have fun, socialize, and win big. On Thursday, July 10, Alameda Brewing is hosting Music Bingo Thursdays for a fun twist on the classic game. Then, on Saturday, July 12, two bingo fundraisers are scheduled on the island. First, head over to Mastick Senior Center for midday festivities, then round out the day with Hawaiian Country Bingo at Hālau Makana.

As always, our local events calendar promises plenty of other fun activities. Check out the third installment of Rhythmix Cultural Works’ family-friendly Rising Seas performances on Saturday, July 12. The same day, Meyer’s House and Garden is hosting quite a treat. Head over to the beautiful property for refreshments, live music by the Alameda String Quartet, and good company.

Thursday, July 10

Check out Alameda Brewing, 1716 Park Street, for Music Bingo Thursdays on Thursday, July 10 and beyond. The weekly events run from 7 to 9 p.m., and are completely free to attend.

Alameda Brewing is partnering with Leaderboard Games to bring Music Bingo to our Island City. The game is similar to traditional bingo, but there’s a twist—instead of calling out numbers, the hosts will play song clips. Find the corresponding song on your bingo card, and mark it off. Guests will compete for prizes, and Alameda Brewing promises “plenty of opportunities to sing and dance along to the music!”

Please note that you’ll need a smartphone to participate in Music Bingo. Each participant will get one interactive electronic bingo card. No registration is required to attend this free event.

Put on your hats and your cowboy boots! Hālau Makana invites the entire community to a rootin’ tootin’ good time at their Hawaiian Country Bingo fundraiser on Saturday, July 12. Head over to the Islandia Club House & Saloon, 1138 Island Drive, to get in on the fun. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the games begin at 6 p.m.

Reserve your spot online in advance. Tickets are $25 for one bingo card. Food and drinks will be available for purchase including cocktails, soft drinks, and sarsaparillas. While you’re there, pay close attention to the host—participants will be competing for prizes!

Hālau Makana, a 501(C)3 nonprofit, is Alameda’s only Polynesian Cultural Center. The organization will celebrate 27 years of service on the island this fall. “I knew as a little girl learning hula from my grandmother that I wanted to teach hula and create a hālau of my own,” founder Kumu Lani told the Alameda Post. “Our mission at Hālau Makana is to preserve the Hawaiian, Tahitian, and Maori cultures through dance, art and music, and to share these cultural art forms with anyone who has a desire to learn.”

Music in the Garden

Saturday, July 12

Mark your calendars for beautiful music, grand architecture, and fabulous landscaping at Music in the Garden on Saturday, July 12. Enjoy the festivities, including a performance by the Alameda String Quartet, at Meyer’s House and Garden, 2021 Alameda Avenue, from 2 to 4 p.m. This fundraiser will help maintain the historic Meyers House and Garden and keep it open to the public.

The Meyers House was built in 1897, and it is a beautiful example of the Colonial Revival style of architecture that was popular at the time. The house and gardens spread over three city lots, and a carriage house stands there to this day. Check out the architecture before and after the performance—helpful docents will be present to answer your questions.

Tickets for the event are $20 per person. Reserve your spot online, then save a printout or a screenshot of your receipt to present at the gate. Non-alcoholic drinks and snacks are included. If you can’t make it on July 12, check out other tours of the Meyers House and Garden every fourth Saturday of the month.

Rising Seas 3

Saturday, July 12

The latest installment of Rhythmix Cultural Works’ Rising Seas performances is scheduled for Saturday, July 12. Put on some sunscreen and head over to Shoreline Park, 215 Adelphian Way for the family-friendly festivities from 1 to 4 p.m.

Rising Seas 3 will feature performances from Hālau Ka Ua Tuahine and Kumu Hula Māhealani Uchiyama. “Bringing stories to life through traditional music and dance, the ensemble aims to foster a greater understanding of our shared human history and shared responsibility for our future,” the event description promises.

The “Climate Detective from the Future” will make another appearance at the event, along with choreographer KT Nelson and her dancers. Attendees are invited to participate in hands-on art activities, including recycled cardboard printmaking and seed bomb making. While you’re there, strike up a conversation with local artists and climate organizations to discuss a “more connected and sustainable future.”

Admission to the event is free. Rhythmix requests that guests RSVP online in advance. Read more about the performers online—and save the date for Rising Seas 4 on August 23 at Bohol Circle Immigrant Park.
