Bear’s-Eye View of Alameda for March 31, 2024
One of the things I love most about being the roving reporter for the Bear’s-Eye View of Alameda is all the things I learn about as I walk around the streets of the city. Occasionally, I get the opportunity to pass on valuable information in the form of a PSA (Public Service Announcement—not the airline). This report is one of those opportunities.
Did you know that slugs are part of a healthy diet for a duck? Well, thanks to Evan and his informative sign that I found while walking the last of the Harbor Bay Lagoon Trails, I found out it’s their escargot, without the shell.
This section starts near the Harbor Bay Club, which is where we parked to walk to the start of the trail.
There is a nice sign that shows people how to stretch before heading out to the trailhead. The first thing I saw was a faucet that allows the water from the San Leandro Bay to fill parts of the lagoon system. This section of the lagoon is pretty. The walking path has grass on the edge of the path, and like other trails, there are lots of flowers and ducks. The backyards that front on the path are beautiful, with garden art and blooming plants. Of course, there were squirrels, too. Argh!
This week, when I took a walk down Park Street, it started off on a really down note that quickly turned around. As I walked past Burma Superstar, a crew was taking down their outdoor dining area. Both me and my human companion thought the worst had happened. The parklet was being dismantled, which meant there would be one less place for us to dine.
As it turns out, the Burma Superstar folks were reconfiguring it to make it a bit narrower and a lot longer. That made me so happy. I love their food!
It also looks like the old Danish Interiors store is finally being replaced. The glass of the front windows and door are covered with paper, but I was able to find a space to peer in. All the furniture is gone, and I saw what looks like some restaurant equipment way in the back.
I saw another new business that has opened since my last trip (no name yet) and the former SumBody space has plastic sheeting over the windows. Maybe a new business is doing some TIs (tenant improvements)?
Over on Central Avenue, I walked by that ongoing renovation project from hell and noticed that the new exterior siding was going on. This can be a tricky installation, especially around the turrets, because the installers need to bend the straight boards to fit around the curve. I wish that crew well and barked a “LOOKING GOOD – KEEP GOING” to support them.
On my way back from Tucker’s house, I walked by what I thought was one of the Little Libraries, but it had no books inside. I looked closer and discovered that it was a seed library. For all you gardeners, I guess it’s time to get the seeds planted.
Today is Easter Sunday and my buddy Tucker came through yet again with a nice holiday lawn sign in front of his house on Morton. So did the Chilcotts, in front of their house. I hope all those little human companions score lots of chocolate eggs and bunnies today. Just remember not to give them to me and my canine friends, and please don’t leave the wrappers around because they smell like the chocolate they wrapped.
