Hate the detours on Central Avenue? Fasten your seat belt—they are about to change.
At the moment, vehicular traffic along Central Avenue near Encinal School flows eastbound only, toward Webster Street. But according to the City’s latest announcement, the contractor is scheduled to complete work on the north side of the road soon—on or after July 7—and will then open it to vehicles. When that happens, they will need to close the south side of the road for construction, and traffic will only be allowed to travel westbound, toward Main Street. That westbound-only pattern will be in place for a few months, the City’s announcement stated.

New detour
Vehicles heading south on Main Street will be directed to turn left onto Pacific Avenue (which turns into Marshall Way/Lincoln Avenue), then right onto Fifth Street and right onto Central Avenue (see map). The City asks that drivers remain aware of the changed conditions, observe all construction detour signs, drive slowly in the cone zone, and follow the direction of construction field personnel.
Local access
Residential, commercial, and emergency access to Third Street, Ballena Boulevard, and Boat Ramp Road “will always be maintained,” according to the City’s announcement. “There will not be any changes to the regularly scheduled garbage pickup unless notified by the City’s Zero Waste team. Street parking within the work area will continue to be limited.”
The current configuration between Webster and Eighth streets will not change in the near future.
