National Vietnam War Veterans Day Event at USS Hornet

The USS Hornet has invited the public to join in a special event to honor our Vietnam War Veterans on Saturday, March 30. The event, which starts at 11 a.m. is an extension of National Vietnam War Veterans Day—the actual holiday is March 29—a day to remember and honor the nine million Americans who served during that war, as well as the 58,000 names on the wall at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC.

Vietnam War Marine Helicopter Pilot and author Bill Collier, who flew the UH-34D Seahorse Helicopter on display at the USS Hornet Museum, will be a special speaker at the event. He will share his experiences and will also have copies of his books available for purchase—The Adventures of a Helicopter Pilot: Flying the H34 Helicopter for the Marine Corps and The Worldwide Adventures of a Helicopter Pilot, the Rest of the Story. He’ll be happy to sign them.

The USS Hornet Museum will also have a special Vietnam War temporary exhibit up all weekend, curated by partners from the Nisei Veteran’s Exhibit. See the rest of the ship’s collection of Vietnam War era aircraft and feel free to enjoy spending the rest of day on the Vietnam Era Aircraft Carrier.

The USS Hornet CVS-12 was an anti-submarine aircraft carrier that served three tours off the coast of Vietnam at Yankee Station in the latter years of her active service. Most of the ship has been left in the exact state it was in when decommissioned in 1970. The aircraft collection includes the US-2B Tracker, F8U-1 Crusader, TA-4J Skyhawk, UH-34D Seahorse, SH-2 Seasprite, SH-3H SeaKing, and F4J Phantom II.

The USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum is located at 707 West Hornet Avenue.
