State Assemblymember Mia Bonta has just announced that applications for the Fall 2024 Student Internship Program are now being accepted. Interested students should apply before August 18, 2024. APPLY HERE
“My office is looking for engaged high school, community college, undergraduates, or graduate students who want to spend a minimum of 10 hours a week learning about California policy-making and empowering our residents and community,” Bonta stated.
The internship, located at the Elihu M. Harris State Building in Downtown Oakland, will play a key role in engaging with the 18th Assembly District, which includes Alameda, Emeryville, and Oakland. The internship combines detailed legislative analysis with thoughtfully designed communication and social media expertise, Bonta said. “Interns will work directly with community members, helping them navigate state government services, and will coordinate with public service groups at events around the District.”
Qualifications, essential duties
The ideal candidate must be currently enrolled or have graduated from an undergraduate or community college program, including rising high school juniors and seniors. The ideal candidate will have a major in Political Science, Journalism, History, International Relations, Public Policy, Economics, English, Communications, Public Relations, Legal Studies or another similar major.
The following qualifications are critical:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to work with minimal
supervision. - Critical thinking and creative problem solving.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines simultaneously.

Although unpaid, interns receive important and lasting benefits such as an extensive understanding of legislative processes, strengthened research skills, networking, and professional development gained by working directly with elected officials, community leaders, and local residents on issues and events related to AD-18 and the State of California.
District staff play an involved role in mentoring and supporting interns who are pursuing careers in the public service sector. Interns have the opportunity to potentially earn a letter of recommendation from the Assemblymember and may also qualify for internship credit from their university or college.
Interns will gain valuable education and work experience by fully participating in agreed-upon work hours. All internship work is voluntary and students will not receive any monetary compensation. Interns are expected to not have any other government or public office internship at the same time.

As space becomes available, qualified candidates will be invited for an interview. The internship will begin September 9. It will end on December 13 for high school students and December 20 for college students.
