On Friday, November 21, Alameda Police Department (APD) officers participated in a planned undercover operation to address retail theft impacting Alameda businesses, according to an APD report on Facebook.

During the operation, seven individuals were arrested or issued citations for offenses including shoplifting, trespassing, and violations of probation or parole terms. APD officers were able to return more than $1,200 of stolen merchandise to the affected businesses.

“Since dedicating business patrol officers to our shopping districts, APD teams have built strong working relationships with local business owners and staff,” the report stated. “These partnerships have given officers valuable insight into how to best support store employees when responding to calls for service. They have also played an important role in the success of our directed enforcement efforts.”

Many community members expressed their gratitude to APD for this and other work they do throughout the year to keep Alameda safe.

“Now THAT’S what I like to hear!” one person commented. “Patrol out there doing what they do best! My family and I are truly grateful for all the department does to keep us safe.”

Another enthusiastic commenter echoed the sentiment, stating, “Great job! This is so important! I hope there are some real consequences, not a revolving door of hand slaps.”

Along with the many expressions of gratitude were requests that APD clamp down on traffic safety issues as well, including: “Thank you for this work. Important to do. Can we please bring back more speed limit enforcement? It’s gotten out of hand and puts a lot of people at risk—other drivers and passengers, pedestrians, and even the speeding driver. I’m tired of feeling like the pace car on a race track!”

Overall, however, most commenters just wanted to thank APD officers for the good work they do every day. “Thank you for supporting our businesses in Alameda,” one person wrote. “APD is on their job and protecting our community. Stop the crime and protect the people of Alameda. God bless you.”

Another added, “Truly grateful for everything you do. The streets feel so much safer, especially near my kiddo’s school.”

And of course, seasonal blessings were offered as well: “Wishing all of our first responders a safe Thanksgiving with your work family or home family.”

APD ended the report with a promise to continue these types of operations to keep both businesses and shoppers safe.

“We look forward to conducting additional operations this holiday season to support our local businesses,” the report stated. “The additional patrols and operations will assist in maintaining safe and welcoming shopping environments for all.”
