Alameda firefighters are continually training on the latest knowledge and skills to be ready to respond to any type of emergency or rescue situation. Living and working on an island means our first responders must be prepared for a variety of situations in the water as well as on land.

A few weeks ago, Alameda Fire Department (AFD) conducted a simulated Water Rescue Drill near Ballena Bay for members assigned to the Marine Operations program to train on surface water rescue and dive rescue skills.
This past week, AFD hosted a rope rescue training session off of the Fruitvale Bridge. This special training for first responders was part of a 40-hour Rope Rescue Awareness/Operations course certified by the California State Fire Marshal and taught in a five-day format.
The session at Fruitvale Bridge provided information and practice for low-angle and high-angle rescue. Participating firefighters were familiarized with simple, complex, and compound rope rescue systems in the low- and high-angle environment.
Over the next several months, AFD will host more sessions of the Rope Rescue Awareness/Operations course, with the State Fire Marshal’s Rope Rescue Technician course.
This training is part of AFD’s continuing effort to ensure that our firefighters are highly trained and ready to respond to a variety of emergencies.
