AFD Pulls Unconscious Person from Sunken Vehicle

Alameda firefighters responded to a water rescue call at approximately 3:30 a.m., Monday, August 21, following a report of a vehicle in the water at Seaplane Lagoon, according to Alameda Fire Department (AFD) reports on Facebook and Instagram.

Alameda firefighters arrived at the scene in the 1000 block of West Tower Avenue and found a vehicle in the water. Rescue swimmers were deployed and rescued a male victim from the water.

The victim was found to be unconscious and not breathing, according to the AFD report. Firefighters provided advanced lifesaving measures and transported the patient to a local trauma center.

AFD also deployed its sub-surface Dive Rescue Team to search the water for any additional victims, but none were located.

Another announcement released later on Monday by the City of Alameda stated, “An Alameda police officer was responding to a call for service of an in-progress theft at Alameda Point when they observed a vehicle leaving the area with its lights off. Moments later, the officer observed the driver lose control of the vehicle and enter the water near Seaplane Lagoon. The Fire Department conducted a comprehensive search of the area and no one else was found in the water. An investigation of the incident is ongoing and no additional information can be released at this time.”
