Saturday afternoon shows are family friendly, dynamic, and affordable
National and local touring acts will bring high-energy, family-friendly concerts to delight Bay Area audiences in Alameda on four Saturday afternoons June through September.
RADIUM Presents has announced its summer concert series with four Saturday performances—June 15, July 20, August 17, and September 21—at RADIUM Runway, Alameda Point’s open-air arts hub with stunning views of the San Francisco Bay and distinct large-scale murals. All of the family-friendly concerts, which feature national and local touring acts, start at 3 p.m., with seating at 2 p.m.
Oakland’s own La Misa Negra launches the summer concert series on June 15, bringing their high-energy Afro-Latin and Cumbia grooves to the Radium Runway outdoor stage. Powered by horn and accordion-driven riffs and a fierce rhythm section, La Misa Negra has shared stages and festival appearances with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Wonder, Lenny Kravitz, and more. The concert opens with samba-reggae-funk band SambaDá.
On July 20, Nashville-based singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso Sunny War headlines the show. Her emotional mix of gospel, blues, folk, and rock are delivered with her signature innovative guitar style which L.A. Weekly’s Michael Simmons raved about, proclaiming, “I haven’t heard a young guitarist this dexterous… in eons.” San Francisco singer-songwriter and guitarist Diana Gameros opens for this concert.
The August 17 concert features Jazz Mafia’s Grateful Brass, reimagining the iconic music of the Grateful Dead with brass, drums, and vocals that dig deep into the Dead’s discography. Their creative re-imaginations are infused with the ebullient spirit of New Orleans Second Line, Afrobeat grooves, energetic Afro-Cuban polyrhythms, and Balkan brass, all sitting on top of a heavy foundation of funk. Modern micro brass band The SticklerPhonics join the bill for this show.
Closing out the series on September 21 is popular Seattle-based funk and soul act, True Loves. The band has been called “simply one of the best bands in Seattle” by KEXP’s John Richards. Opening for the final concert is Bay Area soul duo Andre Cruz and Chris Lujan.
RADIUM’s operations manager Rachel Campos de Ivanov said of the series, “We couldn’t be more excited to share this dramatic location with such an eclectic and talented lineup for this year’s Runway Concert Series. Between the amazing talent and the unique venue, it’s going to be an incredible experience.”
All concerts start at 3 p.m. at RADIUM Runway, 2151 Ferry Point at Alameda Point. General admission tickets are $20 in advance, $25 day-of-show, and youth aged 13 and under are free. A limited number of premium packages, which include admission for two (seated at a table) and two drink tickets, will be available for $49. Concertgoers can dine from local food trucks and grab drinks and snacks from the RADIUM Bar serving local beer and wine.
