USS Hornet Memorial Day Event to Feature Flyover, Guest Speakers

The USS Hornet invites the community for a ceremony and flyover on Memorial Day to commemorate those who have given their lives in service to our country. The public is invited to the May 26 event, which also includes a wreath laying and special guest speakers. The event at the USS Hornet Sea, Air, and Space Museum, 707 West Hornet Avenue, starts at 1 p.m. (doors open at 10 a.m.).

First celebrated in 1868 to honor Union soldiers who lost their lives in the Civil War, Memorial Day now celebrates all United States military personnel lost in all wars. Veterans and active duty military personnel may come aboard and enjoy the USS Hornet event for free.

The two featured speakers will be CDR Trisha J. Kelly, Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Center (NRC) Alameda, and CDR Michael “BC” Molloy, Commanding Officer, Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG), Golden Gate.

CDR Trisha Kelly

Commander Trisha Kelly is a native of Long Island, New York. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography. She also holds a Master of Arts in Education. Kelly began her naval career onboard USS Bunker Hill out of San Diego, and has served in many other locations.

She was a forecaster and tsunami initial responder at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and provided security escorts to high value assets in Kuwait, where she was responsible for the entire weapons and ammunition inventory in the U.A.E. She also was stationed at the Pentagon. She also held many other positions over the years.

Her personal decorations include Full-Time Support (Training and Administration of the Reserve) Junior Officer of the Year in 2020, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medals, United States Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and various unit and campaign awards.

CDR Michael “BC” Molloy

Commander Michael “BC” Molloy is a native of Missoula, Montana.  He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with a focus on National Security Affairs. After commissioning, he coached the Naval Academy Sprint Football team and reported to Pensacola, Florida, for aviation training. He earned his Naval Aviator wings in April 2009.

After receiving initial training with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Two in Norfolk, Virginia, Molloy deployed in support of Operation Unified Response, supporting disaster relief efforts for the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. He also deployed to Fifth Fleet in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2010 and 2012.

Molloy joined the “Red Wolves” in 2013, in direct support to Special Operations Forces. In September 2015, he reported to SEAL Team FOUR at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Virginia, and deployed in support of Special Operations Command Africa. After many other deployments, was assigned to U.S. Special Operations Command in 2021, and then served as executive assistant to the Director of Operations in 2022 and 2023.

Molloy’s personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and various campaign/unit awards.

Tickets for this USS Hornet Memorial Day event may be purchased online or at the Hornet. Prices are as follows:

  • Adults $25.
  • Veterans and active military FREE.
  • Seniors and students $15.
  • Youth (7-17) $10.
  • Children (6 and under) FREE.
  • Museum members FREE.
